Over the past 10 years the GPRD has proven to be a unique research tool contributing to the understanding of public health issues, including drug safety, internationally. Implementation of the new Full Feature GPRD will allow researchers access to all the data collected and has enabled the introduction of new services to facilitate wider usage of the database in a more resource-effective manner. Whilst technology can dramatically enhance the efficiency of the research process, GPRD will never be a "plug in and play'' application. Scientific and clinical expertise and understanding of the limitations of the data collected and of the UK primary care environment are critical to conducting high quality research on the GPRD.
