Methods Of Aerosol Generation

Given a continuous method of aerosol generation, the size distribution and mass concentration of the aerosol produced will remain constant if the parameters that affect the generation and dilution of the aerosol are held constant. In practice, some variation of these controlling parameters will occur, and the desired properties of the generated aerosol will degrade with time. The variation of the controlling parameters is affected by the choice of the particular method of generation and also by the duration of generation.

The size distribution of the aerosol is usually of primary importance, and the concentration is often controlled by dilution. However, some generation methods may produce aerosols with the desired distribution but with concentration that may be too dilute. The discussion of aerosol generation methods given in the following sections focuses on the control of size distribution and concentration. Control of particle shape and structure is discussed in the context of generation methods.
