Aerosol Aggregation Phenomena

Aggregation of aerosol particles can have detrimental effects on their predicted deposition pattern in the lung, since aggregates will deposit in the lungs as if they had the aerodynamic diameter of a larger particle. Therefore, proper deaggregation of particles is important for predictable and reproducible deposition within the respiratory tract.

Whether in a dry state or suspended in a liquid, particles can aggregate significantly. Surface free energy is the driving force for particle aggregation [255]. The extent of aggregation can be controlled by altering particle physical and chemical characteristics or by addition of excipients [256-258]. We give a brief overview of particle aggregation/deaggregation phenomena below (see Refs. 259 and 260 for more extensive discussions).
