The fluid gushing from a hydrothermal vent, as this one seen through the window of the miniature submarine Alvin, can reach temperatures up to 300°C (572°F). The fluid often contains dissolved sulfides from which thermoacidophilic archaea extract energy. Vents such as this one are called black smokers because the vent fluids are dark in color and contain high levels of iron, manganese, and copper.
