Venus' flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), a carnivorous plant, has leaves that are hinged in the middle. In response to an insect landing on an open leaf, the leaf can snap shut in less than a second. Glands on the leaf's surface then secrete enzymes that digest the insect, providing the plant with nutrients it does not get from the poor soil in which it grows.
