Meiosis Ii

Meiosis II occurs in each cell formed during meiosis I and is not preceded by the copying of DNA. The events of meiosis II are shown above. In some species, meiosis II begins after the nuclear membrane re-forms in the new cells. In other species, meiosis II begins immediately following meiosis I.

Prophase II, Metaphase II, and Anaphase II

During prophase II (step G), spindle fibers form and begin to move the chromosomes toward the midline of the dividing cell. In metaphase II (step G), the chromosomes move to the midline of the dividing cell, with each chromatid facing opposite poles of the dividing cell. In anaphase II (step G), the chromatids separate and move toward opposite poles of the cell.

Telophase II and Cytokinesis II

In telophase II (step G), a nuclear membrane forms around the chromosomes in each of the four new cells. Cytokinesis II then occurs, resulting in four new cells, each of which contains half of the original cell's number of chromosomes.
