Gene Expression In Prokaryotes

Scientists first studied gene expression in prokaryotes. Much of our initial knowledge of gene expression came from the work of French scientists François Jacob (1920—) and Jacques Monod (1910-1976) at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. In the early 1960s, Jacob and Monod discovered how genes control the metabolism of the sugar lactose in Escherichia coli, a bacterium that lives in the intestines of mammals. Jacob and Monod won the Nobel Prize in 1965 for their discoveries.
