This entity is characterised by symptoms and signs of meningeal irritation which persist and progress over weeks without improvement. Unlike acute meningitis, the onset is insidious; cranial nerve signs and focal deficits such as hemiparesis, dementia and gradual deterioration of conscious level may predominate. Predisposing factors include immunosuppression and underlying systemic illness eg diabetes mellitus. The outcome depends upon aetiology and the early instigation of appropriate treatment. Chronic meningitis is associated with certain CSF findings.
