Diagnosis is supported by the following investigations:
Creatine kinase (CK) is elevated. Released from necrotic muscle, it is an indicator of disease activity and severity Electromyography
Shows a typical myopathic pattern.
Circulating antibodies e.g. rheumatoid factor, antinuclear factor. Present in 40%.
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) Elevated in most patients.
Muscle biopsy shows necrosis of muscle fibres with inflammatory cells - lymphocytes, plasma cells, leucocytes.
