About 70 percent of patients have a marked reduction in leg pain within four weeks of the onset of symptoms. Symptomatic treatment is recommended for patients with symptoms of herniated disc during the first six weeks of symptoms. Most patients with low back pain respond well to conservative therapy, including limited bed rest, exercise, NSAIDs and injections.
B. Bed rest in excess of two days is not associated with a better outcome and continuing to perform usual activities as tolerated leads to more rapid recovery than bed rest. Excessive bed rest can result in deconditioning, bone mineral loss and economic loss.
