Gastrointestinal side effects

a. Gastrointestinal effects are the most common and clinically significant side effect of NSAIDs. GI effects range from dyspepsia to erosions to ulceration.

b. Concomitant use of misoprostol may prevent NSAID-induced ulcers. Misoprostol should be considered for high-risk patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease or upper GI bleeding, or who are taking corticosteroids or anticoagulants.

c. Omeprazole (Prilosec), has been shown to be effective in preventing ulcers in patients who are taking NSAIDs.
