Laboratory tests

1. The rheumatoid factor assay helps to confirm the diagnosis of RA. Rheumatoid factor serves as a marker for RA, but it is not reliable because 1-2% of the normal population have low levels of rheumatoid factor. Chronic infections, other inflammatory conditions and malignancies may trigger formation of rheumatoid factor. Conversely, 15% of patients with RA are seronegative for rheumatoid factor.

2. A positive rheumatoid factor result supports the diagnosis of RA, but a negative test result does not exclude it.

D. Radiography. Typical erosions around joint margins help confirm the diagnosis of RA. Erosions represent relatively late-stage disease.
