1. Fluvoxamine (LuVox) has been shown to be effective in placebo-controlled studies. Fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil) may also be effective.

2. SSRIs are better tolerated than the tricyclics. Common side effects of SSRIs include sleep disturbance, headaches, gastrointestinal problems and sexual dysfunction. A withdrawal reaction may occur with abrupt cessation of SSRI therapy.

3. The SSRIs are appropriate first-line treatment for panic disorder, especially in patients with comorbid depression.
