1. LSIL includes human papilloma virus (HPV) and CIN 1 (or mild dysplasia). Koilocytotic atypia is indicative of HPV.
2. A significant number of LGSIL smears represent processes that will revert spontaneously to normal without therapy. Repeat Pap smears every 4 to 6 months is recommended, with colposcopy being indicated if there is persistence or progression. However, because some women will progress and because of the high rate of false-negative Pap smears, clinicians may perform colposcopy after the initial LGSIL report.
