Sagittal T1 and T2 (FSE) MR images of the lumbar spine. (A) On T1WI the discs appear darker, of lower intensity than the vertebral bodies. Their texture appears homogenous on T1WI. (B) On fast T2WI the normal discs (nucleus pulposus) are of higher intensity than the vertebral bodies. The annulus fibrosus is darker (star) as shown at L4-L5 level and above. The disc at L5-S1 level is totally dark due to degenerative changes. Note the normal brightness (high intensity) of the CSF within the dural sac, similar to the fatty tissue in the epidural space.
