Using Chemicals to Destroy Microorganisms and Viruses

Germicidal chemicals can be used to disinfect and, in some cases, sterilize. Most chemical germicides react irreversibly with vital enzymes and other proteins, the cytoplasmic membrane, or viral envelopes, although their precise mechanisms of action are often not completely understood (figure 5.6). Although generally less reliable than heat, these chemicals are suitable for treating large surfaces and many heat-sensitive items. Some are sufficiently non-toxic to be used as antiseptics.
