Many infected individuals, including almost half of all infected women, have no symptoms. Warts are the most easily recognized manifestation of infection, with about 750,000 new cases in the United States each year. They often appear on the head or shaft of the penis (figure 25.18), at the vaginal opening, or around the anus. Occasionally, the warts become inflamed or bleed. They often have a large emotional impact because of an unjustified fear of cancer and the embarrassment of having such an obvious STD. Important precancerous lesions of the cervix are generally asymptomatic and can only be detected by vaginal examination.
