Salmonellosis is generally characterized by diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. The symptoms vary depending on the virulence of the strain of Salmonella and the num ber of infecting organisms. The symptoms are usually short-lived and mild.
A few Salmonella strains, for example, the one that causes typhoid fever, cause progressively increasing fever over a number of days, severe headache, and abdominal pain, followed in some cases by intestinal rupture, internal bleeding, shock, and death.
