6.1 Principles of Metabolism

1. Catabolism encompasses processes that capture and store energy by breaking down complex molecules. Anabolism includes processes that use energy to synthesize and assemble the building blocks of a cell. (Figure 6.1)

Harvesting Energy

1. Energy is the ability to do work.

2. Photosysthetic organisms harvest the energy of sunlight, using it to power the synthesis of organic compounds. Chemoorganotrophs transform and use energy contained in organic compounds. (Figure 6.3)
