Handwashing, disinfectants, and other sanitary measures can minimize transmission of Norwalk viruses. There is no vaccine, and no proven antiviral medication.

Hepatitis A, formerly called infectious hepatitis, is endemic around the world. The distribution of reported cases in the United States is shown in figure 24.18, but its true incidence is undoubtedly much higher. With its lack of an animal reservoir for the causative virus, its antigenic simplicity, and the availability of an effective vaccine, the disease could be considered for eradication. Hepatitis A is only one example of viral hepatitis; at least five other kinds of viral hepatitis, B, C, D, E, and G, are known.
