Pathogenesis

Knowledge of the pathogenesis of chancroid is incomplete. Typically, a small pimple appears, presumably at the site of entry of the organisms. After a few days, this ulcerates and gradually enlarges, reaching an inch or more in diameter, often joining other lesions. Organisms that reach the lymph nodes incite an intense inflammatory response, with congregation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils, release of proteolytic enzymes, and liquefication of the lymphoid tissue. The pus-filled nodes enlarge, stretch the skin, and rupture through to the surface, discharging their contents.^ neu-trophils, pp. 376, 385
