Polyenes Amphotericin B, nystatin

Binds to ergosterol, disrupting the plasma membrane and causing leakage of the cytoplasm. Amphotericin B is very toxic but the most effective drug for treating life-threatening infections; newer lipid-based emulsions are less toxic but very expensive. Nystatin is too toxic for systemic use, but it can be used topically.
