The precise amount of acid can be measured using chemical means such as titration. Most commonly, however, acid production is used to detect growth by incorporating a pH indicator into a medium. A pH indicator changes from one color to another as the pH of a medium changes. Several pH indicators are available, and they differ in the value at which their color changes.
