When investigations lead to an understanding of the mechanisms of hemolysis, it is then possible to pursue more specific investigations. Some of these tests are complex and require expertise. With failure of the definitive test to confirm the diagnosis, clinicians are sometimes surprised at how difficult it can sometimes be to establish firmly the cause of hemolysis. In some hemolytic diseases it is essential that the tests be performed at the time of hemolysis; in other cases the tests will only be diagnostic when the patient is not hemolysing.
