Utility rooms

Clean and dirty utility rooms must be separate, each with its own access. A clean utility room is used to prepare and clean items for sterilization and to restock treatment trolleys. An autoclave is usually sited here for in-house sterilization of specific items (sterilization of most items is performed in the central hospital facility). Sinks and taps with bench surfaces that are easy to clean are essential. A dirty utility room is required to clean bedpans and to decontaminate or dispose of used dressings, linen, and monitoring devices. A sluice and sinks with taps are necessary. Systems such as covered containers must be provided to dispose of needles and contaminated substances and fluids.
