Many published studies suggest that hemopoietic growth factors such as granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor shorten the duration of neutropenia when given prophylactically to patients with solid tumors ( Kim...iand..iDem..e.trl..1996)- The incidence of fever also appears to be curtailed, with an associated reduction in the use of systemic antibiotics and in-patient stay. However, there is no evidence to date that the routine use of these growth factors improves survival.
