Types of endotracheal tube

Most endotracheal tubes currently in use are made of polyvinylchloride (PVC) and are for single use only. They are provided in presterilized packs of unmodified length with a 15-mm male connector at the proximal or ventilator end. The tubes can be cut to the desired length when needed; length in centimeters is indicated along the tube, and internal and external diameters are indicated in millimeters. A guide to diameters and lengths is given in Table 1 A radio-opaque strip runs along the length of the tube. The distal end is bevel shaped to minimize the likelihood of complete occlusion if the end abuts against the tracheal wall. Other markings are the inscriptions IT and Z79 which indicate that the material has been tested and approved as non-irritant and non-toxic.
