It is generally agreed that non-cardiogenic edema is the result of direct injury of the pulmonary capillary and, frequently, the alveolar membrane. This mechanism of injury has many characteristics of an inflammatory response. Many therapies against general or specific components of the inflammatory response have been developed. Generally, these are encouraging in the laboratory but are unsuccessful in clinical practice. A summary of pharmacological agents is given in Table.1.
