The clinical consequences of nutritional failure

The obvious effects of malnutrition are reduction in weight, loss of fat, and progressive muscle wasting. In addition to its effects on body composition, malnutrition is associated with impaired respiratory function, cardiac function, immune responsiveness, wound healing, and mobilization ( Table..!)- Severely malnourished patients who require surgery are also at increased risk of postoperative complications and consequently have a longer hospital stay. Therefore one should not be too surprised that malnutrition can lead to delayed recovery from illness or injury in the hospital patient.
