Almitrine bismesylate is a triazine derivative which stimulates the carotid body, thus increasing the response to hypoxia with little effect on the response to
hypercapnia. Improvement in V/Q relationships have also been recorded in patients with hypoxemic chronic obstructive airways disease ( Powles et al 1983). The mechanism of the latter effect is unclear, but may be due to increased pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary artery pressure associated with a small decrease in cardiac output.
