Low or high levels of stress may lead to ill health if the carer is exposed to them for some time. The exact amount of time varies from individual to individual. The symptoms of stress may be psychological, physiological, or behavioral (Tab.!®... .4).

These symptoms may progress to a syndrome of exhaustion, disillusionment, and withdrawal known as 'burnout'. This is a progressive disorder in staff with high and sustained level of stress. It produces feelings of tension, irritability, and fatigue, ending with a defensive reaction of detachment, apathy, cynicism, or rigidity.
