Status epilepticus

When status epilepticus develops in a critically ill patient, the etiologies are the same as those of discrete seizures. Status epilepticus, particularly in patients with systemic disorders affecting the central nervous system, may not manifest as convulsions and should be considered in any case of prolonged change in mental status. In recent series, the most frequent causes for those patients admitted to ICUs primarily because of status epilepticus were withdrawal from alcohol or antiseizure drugs, anoxia, head trauma, central nervous system infection, acute metabolic disturbances, and tumors.
