The extent and severity of illnesses affecting ICU patients dictate a high level of nursing care, with strict application of rigid barrier nursing techniques to prevent outbreak of nosocomial infection. Breakdown of these techniques during periods of understaffing or overcrowding has been associated with outbreaks of nosocomial infection. Therefore an ideal nurse-to-patient staffing ratio of 1:1 has been recommended to reduce breakdown of techniques leading to person-to-person transmission of pathogens within ICUs. However, this may not be cost effective.
