Specific therapy

In cases where weakness is due to systemic disease the underlying process should be corrected. Very few of the primary neurological conditions leading to weakness are amenable to specific therapy. Patients with polymyositis and other inflammatory myopathies may respond to treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents. Surgical stabilization or treatment of the traumatized patient should be prompt. Infective causes of weakness should be treated with appropriate antibiotics.
