Sound

Reducing noise levels will also reduce environmental stress. There may be national standards for minimal sound levels. Noise levels below 45 dB during the day, 40 dB in the evening, and 20 dB at night have been recommended (SCCM 1994). Sound engineers should be consulted in the building and commissioning of the ICU. Sound-absorbing materials and noise filters should be used in walls, ceilings, partitions, and work-tops. Similarly, floors should have coverings that absorb sound, with consideration of maintenance, durability, trolley movement, and infection control factors.
