Sodium citrate

Trisodium citrate may be used as a regional anticoagulant in at-risk patients undergoing extracorporeal renal replacement therapy. It is a safe and effective alternative to conventional heparinization in the critically ill ( Mehta §L§L 1990). Citrate has advantages over heparin in that it has no known antiplatelet activity, is readily filtered by a hemofilter (reducing systemic anticoagulation), and is overwhelmed and neutralized when returned to central venous blood.
