Skin injury

Depending on the type of electrical injury, there may be only small marks on the skin or extensive charring at contact sites with or without adjacent cutaneous thermal damage. Thermal injury is often the result of clothing catching fire or of arcing from a high-voltage source causing high temperatures in the immediate surroundings of the patient. It is important to realize that the extent of the cutaneous injury bears no relation to underlying damage, which may be much worse. Escharotomy should be considered if there is evidence of any soft tissue compression, and debridement of necrotic tissue, tangential excision of the burn wound, and grafting should be performed according to normal surgical practice in burn management.
