Loop diuretics can induce azotemia when blood pressure decreases following a vigorous diuresis. Furthermore, electrolyte disturbances (hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, and metabolic alkalosis) may be seen. Ototoxicity is known to occur when high doses of loop diuretics are given. Finally, gastrointestinal and allergic reactions have been described. Special care must be taken in situations where renal elimination of furosemide is not possible. Indeed, hepatotoxicity related to hepatotoxic metabolism has been reported in experimental studies. However, such adverse effects have not been diagnosed in humans.
