Sickle cell trait

Inheritance of the sickle cell gene from one parent and the gene for normal adult hemoglobin (HbA) from the other results in a benign condition called sickle cell trait in which HbS levels (20-45 per cent) are not high enough to cause the complications of sickle cell disease under normal physiological conditions. Under unusual conditions, such as respiratory depression induced by anesthesia or drugs, environmental conditions of high-altitude climbing or in unpressurized aircraft, cyanotic heart disease, or severe pulmonary pathology, hypoxemia sufficient to induce sickling-related pathology may occur.
