Propofol

Propofol is a novel anesthetic agent. It acts primarily as a GABAA agonist, but also has effects at several other receptors. This drug is rapidly becoming the agent of choice for the management of refractory status epilepticus. At the doses required to control refractory status, it appears to produce less myocardial depression than equivalent doses of pentobarbital. The major problem with long infusions at high doses stems from the lipid vehicle in which the drug is dissolved. The vehicle provides 1.1 kcal/ml as fat and may produce elevated plasma triglyceride concentrations, which on rare occasions lead to pancreatitis.
