Prophylaxis of highaltitude pulmonary edema

All climbers who have developed high-altitude pulmonary edema once should be informed that the relapse rate is up to 60 per cent. Thus, as for acute mountain sickness, adequate acclimatization is essential. Climbers who are susceptible to high-altitude pulmonary edema should be thoroughly instructed in the use of nifedipine as prophylaxis and treatment in future ascents. Intake of 20 mg of nifedipine three times daily can prevent high-altitude pulmonary edema effectively in susceptible climbers. An episode of high-altitude pulmonary edema is not a contraindication for future high-altitude exposures if susceptible climbers have been informed properly about preventive measures.
