Prevention

Metabolic alkalosis commonly occurs in settings where it could have been anticipated. Therefore prevention of the generating factors is frequently possible, for example by limiting bicarbonate administration in acute metabolic acidosis, preventing acid losses due to gastric drainage (e.g. H 2 receptor antagonists), restricting diuretic administration, or providing chloride on reversal of sustained hypercapnia. Prevention of the development of maintenance factors may also be possible by providing sufficient amounts of fluids, sodium, potassium, and chloride.
