Preparation and administration

Albumin accounts for 60 to 80 per cent of normal plasma colloid osmotic pressure and therefore human albumin solutions were originally manufactured from pooled plasma to be used in the resuscitation of patients with acute blood loss. They are prepared by fractionation, filtration, and heat treatment to inactivate any contaminating viruses. However, compared with the artificial colloids that are now available, they are expensive and therefore there are few indications for the use of albumin nowadays. It is supplied in strengths between 4.5 per cent and 20 per cent; the latter is used for edema in hypoproteinemic states.
