Paraquat

Paraquat, a widely used herbicide introduced in 1962, has caused many fatalities worldwide ( Bismuth and Hall 1995). The most common liquid formulation contains

20 per cent by weight of paraquat ion, a dark blue-green pigment, and an emetic. One mouthful of the 20 per cent concentrate can produce fatal respiratory failure due to pulmonary fibrosis. The effects of treatments are not satisfactory.

In Japan, the 24 per cent by weight formulation was changed in 1986 to the present formulation containing 5 per cent paraquat dichloride and 7 per cent diquat dibromide. However, the prognosis of patients has not significantly improved.
