Vecuronium is recommended as it does not release histamine. Patients receiving prolonged non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockade over several days, particularly in combination with corticosteroids, may experience significant skeletal muscle wasting. This myopathy is usually fully reversible over weeks but may delay ventilator weaning.
