Organdirected therapy

After adequate resuscitation further treatment of established multiple organ failure aims at supporting individual organs. Sometimes supportive therapy of one organ may adversely affect the function of another. For example, the use of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) to support lung function may alter hepatosplanchnic blood flow. Regular clinical evaluation, monitoring of hemodynamic and blood gas indices, and the use of blood lactate levels is essential to guide interventions in these patients.
