Measurements of Vo2, VCO2, and gas flow and volume are known collectively as spirometry. Open-circuit variants, such as breath-by-breath, mixing chamber, and dilution systems, all rely on the measurement of O2 and CO2 concentrations in both the inspired gas (FiO 2, FiCO2) and the expired gas (FeO2, FeCO2) together with the exhaled minute ventilation (Ve). The inhaled minute ventilation ( V,) can be assumed to be the same as Ve, directly measured or indirectly calculated.
