Nutrition

All patients with chronic liver disease are malnourished to varying degrees. Protein catabolism is increased after liver transplantation, and complications such as sepsis and prolonged stay in the intensive care unit increase nitrogen loss and contribute to morbidity ( DiCecco efla|, 1991). Phosphate depletion may cause muscle weakness and delay weaning from ventilation. Enteral nutrition should be started as soon as possible. The role of glutamine and other immunonutrients in this population remains to be determined.
