Noninvasive pressure support

Finally, another important clinical application of pressure support is non-invasive ventilation. This technique has been used for the supportive treatment of selected patients with acute decompensations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and without comorbidities. The use of face-mask pressure support has proved extremely useful in these patients; it improves gas exchange, avoids intubation and mechanical ventilation in approximately 75 per cent of these patients, and also decreases mortality rate and hospital stay when compared with conventional treatment.
