Target-controlled infusion, patient demand target-controlled infusion, and computer-assisted continuous infusion are some of the analgesic technologies that are undergoing development. They facilitate the maintenance of a selected effect-site concentration through an infusion pump linked to a pharmacokinetically modeled computer program. Such technologies allow the use of opioids such as alfentanil which has a low tissue solubility, ensuring a rapid onset and short latency to peak effect and short duration of action.
